The Weekend Academy facilitates two initiatives:

1.     Math/Science Enrichment Program

2.     Teacher Training Lab

The CAHMCP Weekend Academy hosts a math/science enrichment component serving primarily Jr. High School through college students to strengthen their math and science skills. The Academy is held every Saturday (some Sundays) from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm., throughout the year on the IIT campus. It is attended by 56-64 students/week who participate in a rigorous reinforcement of:

1.     Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus and Calculus skills;

2.     Higher levels of Biology, Physics and Chemistry;

3.     Weekly reviews of Jr. High and High School science projects;

4.     Other support activities.

Under a partnership with Carter G. Woodson Library-African American Archives, Weekend Academy participants have access to library research materials as well as computer resources. Two Saturdays per month participants are afforded a private conference room, printing services and Internet Access. A specific topic/agenda is usually scheduled and typically involve school projects or science fair presentations.

The Weekend Academy is open to students every Saturday from September through June, and daily between July through August. Starting at the Junior High level, Weekend Colloquium students will acquire an appreciation for high level academic performance. Earlier intervention to remediate gaps in basic learning skills unquestionably results in better performance later in the academic career.

CAHMCP undergraduate and post baccalaureate students and CAHMCP senior alum serve as instructors, tutors and/or mentors for Academy pupils. Through its Teacher Training Lab, CAHMCP will contract with the Academic Support Division of Kennedy-King College to provide instruction and supervised practice in the "Learning to Learn" and/or "Direct Instruction and Precision Teaching" systems. These required instructional workshops are scheduled for September. Twice-weekly instructor monitoring to assure quality control will begin in October and continue through August.
