
Goal
To provide
experiential, enrichment, and academic placements which facilitate the
development of a special set of skills, attitudes, and understandings
for persons seeking entry into a program in Allopathic Medicine, Osteopathic
Medicine, Chiropractic, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Optometry, Pharmacy,
Podiatry, or Public Health.
Requirements
Evidence
of interest in a health profession; demonstration of personal value and
character traits conducive to the development of a concerned, qualified
health professional; matriculation in an undergraduate pre-health professional program; and GPA 2.5.
Process
Completion
of an application; Spring interview: Approval of preceptorship by CAHMCP
staff; Orientation meeting; Placement; Submission of a logbook or grade;
Follow-up evaluation; and attendance/ participation in Kwanzaa or other
planned program activity.
The Range of the Preceptorship Program
Experimental
Participants
are placed in hospitals, health centers, HMO's, or health professional
offices in relationship to their specified career goal and given 'hands
on experience'. The minimum time required is 100 hours, which is
arranged by the consent of the participant and Site Preceptor.
Enrich
Placement
in advanced career preparatory and service initiatives.
Research
Placements
are made with medical and life sciences researchers who are involved in
research usually affiliated with a medical school. Research programs
at universities or at other health programs will be accepted.
Shadowing
Select
participants will be placed with a health professional for a short, intense
experience.
Academic
Courses
can be taken to fulfill a pre-health curriculum requirement or for enrichment.
Student-Initiated
Usually
such preceptorships simply involve activities offered by other health
career development programs outside the Chicago metropolitan area, including
sites overseas.
